A normal part of aging involves the deterioration of tissues,
especially those of the spine. This deterioration and breakdown
occurs with all individuals over time, but the degree varies
from person to person. The reasons for this are not clear,
however, it seems that a history of spinal stress and abuse,
as well as not incorporating spinal exercises and proper
postural habits accelerates the deterioration process.
Chiropractic care is extremely important for the maturing
and elderly adult because of the dramatic changes that occur
in the spine. As we age, spinal discs, joints, ligaments, muscles,
and other spinal tissues become weaker, less hydrated, and
less able to withstand normal everyday stresses. As a result
of this, spinal pain from arthritis becomes more prominent,
tissue injury from relatively minor events occurs, and the
time to heal from injuries increases.
Chiropractors
help millions of maturing individuals regain control of their
lives every year. Our treatments
are designed
to eliminate acute and chronic pain, increase flexibility,
improve mobility and function, increase strength, enhance balance,
and increase the overall quality of one’s life. Through
the use of gentle adjustive and mobilization techniques, physical
therapies, and incorporation of stretching and exercise programs,
spinal pain is reduced, spinal stresses are decreased, flexibility
and mobility are improved, and degeneration is minimized. The
range of conditions that can be helped is extensive and includes
back, and joint pain, headaches, numbness and tingling going
into the hands, sciatica, and arthritis. Pain and problems
that occur after falls, bumps, and accidents are also alleviated.
Research of the effectiveness of chiropractic care on the
elderly revealed positive results. Elder users of chiropractic
care were less likely to have been hospitalized, less likely
to be placed in a nursing home, more likely to report a better
health status, more likely to exercise and more likely to be
active and mobile in the community.
When you
are at your best physically, other things seem to go better
too. Your job, relationships, and
especially your
enjoyment of life are better when you feel good and are out
of pain. Don’t delay getting a spinal checkup. A spinal
checkup takes no longer than 10 minutes and involves painless,
computerized technology that gives an instant reading of areas
in your spine where the deterioration process may be occurring.
No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to begin
receiving chiropractic care. If you are in pain, don’t
wait until the pain is unbearable. If you are not in pain,
let chiropractic care keep you feeling good and prevent any
problems from occurring.
